Bars and Fried-Chicken Shops Shrink in Seoul While Skincare Salons and Side-Dish Stores Grow

서울시 상권분석서비스에 따르면 서울의 외식업 점포는 2024년 2분기 16만1242곳에서 올해 2분기 15만3205곳으로 줄었습니다. 호프·간이주점은 2529곳(14.2%), 치킨전문점은 569곳(9.0%) 감소했습니다. 반면 피부관리실은 2224곳(26.2%) 늘었습니다. 반찬가게는 239곳, 완구점은 193곳(20.5%) 많아졌습니다. 편의점은 754곳(7.8%) 줄었습니다.

Translation

According to the Seoul Commercial District Analysis Service, restaurant and food-service outlets in Seoul fell from 161,242 in the second quarter of 2024 to 153,205 in the second quarter of this year. Beer halls and small bars were down by 2,529 (14.2 percent), and fried-chicken shops by 569 (9.0 percent). Skincare salons, by contrast, rose by 2,224 (26.2 percent). Side-dish shops increased by 239 and toy shops by 193 (20.5 percent). Convenience stores fell by 754 (7.8 percent).

Grammar points

N에 따르면according to N

Names the source of the information that follows, and it almost always opens the sentence. Keep it apart from N에 따라 ('depending on N'), which says an outcome varies with something: 따르면 tells you who reported it, 따라 tells you what it changes with. The sentence usually ends in a plain statement, since the attribution is already made at the front.

Example: 기상청에 따르면 내일은 비가 옵니다.

According to the weather agency, it will rain tomorrow.

반면on the other hand, whereas

Marks a contrast with what was just said. Used alone at the head of a sentence it works like English 'by contrast'; attached to a clause as -(으)ㄴ/는 반면 it means 'whereas'. Statistics writing reaches for it when one line of a table moves the opposite way from the last: 반면 피부관리실은 … 늘었습니다.

Example: 형은 조용한 반면 동생은 활발합니다.

The older brother is quiet, whereas the younger one is lively.

-아/어지다to become ~, to get ~

Added to an adjective stem, it turns a state into a change of state: 많다 ('to be many') becomes 많아지다 ('to become more numerous'). This is how Korean says 'got bigger, got cheaper' — there is no separate verb. The article uses it for a count that rose: 239곳 많아졌습니다. On action verbs the same ending makes a passive instead, so the stem type decides the reading.

Example: 요즘 낮이 짧아졌습니다.

The days have got shorter lately.
