재발 위험 큰 VETC 간암, 유전자 발현 차이 확인

Gene Expression Differences Confirmed in VETC Liver Cancer, a Pattern With High Recurrence Risk

Translation

A research team at Seoul National University Hospital analysed liver cancer tissue using spatial transcriptomics to look at the molecular characteristics of VETC liver cancer. VETC is a form in which blood vessels surround clusters of tumour cells, and when this pattern appears the risk of recurrence after surgery is high and the survival rate falls further. The analysis found that, compared with VETC-negative areas, positive areas had 39 genes with increased expression and 235 with decreased expression. The LAMTOR2 protein showed a difference too, appearing in 71 percent of VETC-positive liver cancers and 27 percent of negative ones. The findings were published in the online edition of the international journal Hepatology International.

Grammar points

N과/와 비교해compared with N

Sets up an explicit comparison. 과 follows a consonant, 와 a vowel, and the whole phrase usually sits just before the thing being measured. 비교해 is the -아/어 form of 비교하다 used adverbially; 비교하여 is the same thing in stiffer written style. The article measures one tissue type against another: 음성 영역과 비교해 유전자 39개는 늘고.

Example: 지난해와 비교해 학생 수가 줄었습니다.

Compared with last year, the number of students has fallen.

-(으)면if, when

The general conditional. Korean does not separate 'if' from 'when' the way English does — -(으)면 covers both, and context decides which reading fits. In scientific writing it usually states a regularity rather than a one-off possibility, as here: 이 패턴을 보이면 재발 위험이 크고 — whenever the pattern appears, the risk is high.

Example: 물은 백 도가 되면 끓습니다.

Water boils when it reaches one hundred degrees.

N을/를 보이다to show N, to exhibit N

Literally 'to show N', used of something displaying a property rather than a person showing an object. Research and statistics writing relies on it: 차이를 보였습니다 ('showed a difference'), 패턴을 보이면 ('if it shows the pattern'). The subject is the thing being described, not an agent doing the showing, so English often turns it around into 'a difference was seen'.

Example: 두 집단은 뚜렷한 차이를 보였습니다.

The two groups showed a clear difference.
