광교 산책로에 나타난 대형 도마뱀, 11일 만에 포획

Large Lizard That Appeared on a Gwanggyo Walking Path Is Caught After 11 Days

Translation

A large lizard that had appeared in the Gwanggyo new town area of Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, was caught at about 11:37 a.m. on the 22nd. It came 11 days after word got out that it had been spotted on a walking path on the 11th. The lizard was about 70 cm long, and no one was hurt during the capture. The city of Suwon set up seven traps around the apartment complexes, the library and the walking path, and put food such as live chickens and mice inside to draw the lizard in. The city plans to send the animal to the National Institute of Biological Resources to confirm exactly what species it is.

Grammar points

-(으)ㄴ 지 N 만이다it has been N since ~ing

Counts the time elapsed since something happened. The 지 here is a bound noun meaning 'the time since', not the 지 of -지 않다, and it needs the past modifier -(으)ㄴ in front. 만이다 closes the count: 알려진 지 11일 만입니다 — eleven days since it became known. Note how Korean repeats the number: the sighting was on the 11th and the capture came 11 days later.

Example: 한국에 온 지 삼 년 만에 고향에 갔습니다.

I went back home three years after coming to Korea.

N가량about N, approximately N

Attaches directly to a quantity to soften it. It sits after the number and its counter — 70㎝가량 — unlike 약, which goes in front (약 70㎝). Both are common in news; 가량 feels slightly more measured, and you will also meet 쯤 in speech and 정도 in both.

Example: 행사에 삼백 명가량이 모였습니다.

About three hundred people gathered at the event.

N 등N and so on, such as N

Placed after a list to say it is not exhaustive. Korean news uses it constantly, and it matters for reading carefully: 생닭과 쥐 등 먹이 means chickens and mice were among the bait, not that they were all of it. When you translate, keep the 'and so on' — dropping it turns a partial list into a complete one.

Example: 사과와 배 등 과일을 샀습니다.

I bought fruit such as apples and pears.
