Professor Francis Halzen of the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the United States has been chosen for the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics. On October 6, the Nobel Committee said it recognized his decisive contribution to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos coming from space. Professor Halzen is the head of research at this observatory. The IceCube observatory is at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica, and it is the world's largest neutrino detector, in operation since 2010. Professor Halzen will receive 12 million Swedish kronor (1.61 billion won) as prize money. It is the first time in 34 years, since Georges Charpak in 1992, that the Nobel Prize in Physics has gone to just one person.
