KTX·SRT 한 앱으로 예매…'코레일+' 8월 3일 출시

KTX and SRT in One App: Korail+ Launches August 3

Translation

From 9 a.m. on August 3, you will be able to book both KTX and SRT trains in a single app, '코레일+' (Korail+). Korail+ is not a newly built app: it is the KTX booking app people already use, '코레일톡' (Korail Talk), which you simply update and keep using. Tickets for trains running from September 1 can be bought only on Korail+ and on the Korail website, starting at 10 a.m. on August 5. From September, KTX and SRT trains will be run together, and on weekdays the number of seats will grow by 15,000 a day. Fares will also be an average of 10% lower than current KTX fares. And the benefit that gives you back 5% of what you pay as mileage points will now be available on SRT trains too.

Grammar points

-게 되다to come to ~, to end up ~

Attached to a verb stem, -게 되다 says that a situation changes and something becomes the case, usually because of circumstances rather than the speaker's own decision. In the article it appears as -(으)ㄹ 수 있게 되다, 'to become able to ~': something that was not possible before now is.

Example: 회사가 이사해서 저는 지하철로 다니게 됐습니다.

The company moved, so I ended up commuting by subway.

-는 것the act of ~ing (nominaliser)

-는 것 turns a verb into a noun phrase, like English '~ing' or 'the thing that ~'. Use -는 것 for present actions and -(으)ㄴ 것 for past ones. Ending a sentence with -는 것입니다 explains what something really is or amounts to.

Example: 제 취미는 주말에 기차를 타는 것입니다.

My hobby is riding trains on weekends.

-(으)면서as, while (two things at once)

-(으)면서 links two things that happen at the same time. With one subject it means 'while doing A, B' (음악을 들으면서 공부합니다). In news style the two clauses often have different subjects, and then it means 'as A happens, B changes' — which is how the article uses it.

Example: 비가 오면서 기온이 크게 떨어졌습니다.

As the rain came, the temperature dropped sharply.

-아/어 주다to do something for someone

Added to a verb stem, -아/어 주다 shows that the action is done for someone's benefit. Use -아 주다 after ㅏ/ㅗ vowels and -어 주다 elsewhere; 하다 becomes 해 주다. It works for people and, as in the article, for companies or services acting on the customer's behalf.

Example: 친구가 기차표를 대신 예매해 주었습니다.

My friend booked the train ticket for me.
