고향사랑기부금 세액공제, 지역별로 달라진다

Korea's Hometown Love Donation Tax Credit Set to Vary by Region Under 2026 Tax Reform Plan

Translation

In the "2026 Tax Reform Plan" announced on August 3, the government said it will apply the tax credit for Hometown Love donations differently depending on the region the donation goes to. According to the plan, in the bracket above 100,000 won and up to 200,000 won, the credit rate for the Seoul metropolitan area and for metropolitan cities outside it stays at 40%, while other non-capital regions and preferential regions within those other non-capital areas rise to 50%. In the bracket above 200,000 won and up to 20 million won, only preferential regions within the other non-capital areas have the rate expanded to 25%, while the remaining regions keep the current 15%. The government explained that this is a measure to narrow the donation gap between regions. However, this plan has not yet been fixed in law, and because it must go through National Assembly deliberation, the final content may change.

Grammar points

N에 따르면according to N

Attaches to a noun naming a source — a document, an announcement, a person — to mark what follows as reported information rather than the writer's own claim. It is standard in news Korean and usually opens the sentence.

Example: 기상청 발표에 따르면 이번 주말에는 비가 오겠습니다.

According to the weather agency's announcement, it will rain this weekend.

-되다passive: be done / become

Added to a Sino-Korean noun (유지, 확대, 확정, 결정), -되다 forms a passive or change-of-state verb: 유지되다 'be maintained', 확대되다 'be expanded'. News writing favours it because the rule or the figure itself can be the subject and no actor has to be named.

Example: 회의 시간은 오전 열 시로 결정되었습니다.

The meeting time was set for ten in the morning.

-(으)므로because; since

A formal written connective that gives a reason, common in news reports and official documents. It is close in meaning to -기 때문에 but more bookish, and it is rarely heard in casual conversation.

Example: 신청자가 많으므로 일찍 오시는 것이 좋습니다.

Since there are many applicants, it is better to come early.
