Part of the August 9, 2026 daily edition
Translation
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on July 31 that, following the collapse of the Seosomun overpass on May 26, it had carried out a joint government safety inspection of aging public bridges nationwide. The inspection covered bridges rated safety grade D or E and ran from June 23 to July 10. According to the inspection results, a total of 57 bridges — 53 rated D and 4 rated E — need safety measures, but the necessary budget has not been secured. The government has decided to give priority funding of 2.1 billion won from the special disaster and safety subsidy to the four grade-E bridges that require immediate action. For the 53 grade-D bridges, it plans to consult with local governments and continue supporting safety measures.

Grammar points
N에 따르면according to N
Attached to a noun that names a source of information — a report, an announcement, a survey, an inspection result — to show that what follows is not the writer's own claim but what that source says. Very common in news writing, and the sentence that follows usually ends in a reporting or descriptive form.
Example: 안내문에 따르면 도서관은 오늘 문을 닫습니다.
According to the notice, the library is closed today.
N(으)로 인해due to N
A formal written way of giving a cause. It attaches to a noun — usually an event or a condition — and the following clause states what that event brought about. In speech people say 때문에; in newspapers and official statements, -(으)로 인해 is the normal choice.
Example: 폭우로 인해 다리 공사가 며칠 늦어졌습니다.
Due to the heavy rain, the bridge construction was delayed by several days.
-되다 (피동)gets done, is carried out
Many Sino-Korean nouns form an active verb with -하다 and a passive one with -되다: 진행하다 (to carry out) → 진행되다 (to be carried out), 확보하다 (to secure) → 확보되다 (to be secured). News Korean prefers -되다 when the actor is obvious or deliberately left unmentioned, so the focus stays on what happened.
Example: 공사 예산이 아직 확보되지 않았습니다.
The budget for the construction has not been secured yet.
