A UNIST Team Wins a Top Paper Prize at an International Security Symposium, a First for a Korean Institution
Part of the August 17, 2026 daily edition
Translation
On August 17, UNIST announced that a paper by the team of Professor Wi Seong-il of its Department of Computer Science and Engineering, on a technology for finding security vulnerabilities in web browsers, had been selected for the 'Internet Defense Prize' at the 35th USENIX Security Symposium. It is the first time a Korean institution has produced a winning paper since the prize was established in 2014. This year 3,028 papers were submitted to USENIX Security and 362 were accepted; only three received the Internet Defense Prize, a top paper award sponsored by Meta. The technology the team presented, 'BUIzz', automatically finds flaws where a browser's security policy misfires during UI interactions — opening a link in a new tab or a split screen, dragging it into the address bar, reopening a closed tab, and the like. Using BUIzz, the team found 35 security bugs and three functional errors across six major browsers including Chrome, Firefox and Edge, and reported the vulnerabilities to the companies concerned, receiving 14,700 dollars in bounties last year. Professor Wi and Jeong Min-ki, the paper's first author, donated 10 million won of that money to the department's development fund last year.

Grammar points
N(으)로 선정되다to be selected as N
로 marks what something was chosen to be. The passive 선정되다 leaves the selectors unnamed, which is how award news is written — the committee is understood, and naming it would push the paper out of the subject position where the story wants it.
That work was selected as the grand prize winner.
N 이후 처음the first since N
A bounded first: nothing of the kind has happened since the named point, which is not the same as saying it never happened before. Here the prize itself only dates from 2014, so 'first since 2014' happens to mean 'first ever' — but the sentence still states the boundary, because that is what the writer can verify.
Example: 2015
It is the first time this has happened since 2015.
-(으)ㄴ 바 있다has previously ~ed
A formal way of noting something that happened earlier and is being brought up as background. It is not the ordinary experience form -(으)ㄴ 적이 있다; 바 있다 belongs to written reporting and often flags a fact the reader may already know, added here so the prize is understood against work that had already produced results.
The company had also received an award last year.
