Four in Ten Community Credit Cooperative Customers Are Now Over 60
Part of the August 17, 2026 daily edition
Translation
As of the end of last year, customers aged 60 and over made up 38.1 percent of those doing business with the Community Credit Cooperatives. That is 5.9 percentage points higher than the 32.2 percent at the end of 2021. Over the same period, the share of customers aged 30 and under fell from 21.7 percent at the end of 2021 to 17.9 percent at the end of last year. It is much the same at the Credit Unions: as of the end of last year, members aged 60 and over accounted for 45.6 percent of individual members, while those aged 30 and under came to only 14.1 percent. Meanwhile the share of people aged 60 and over in the country's population rose from 25.2 percent to 29.3 percent over the same period, a rise of 4.1 percentage points — so these customer bases are ageing faster than the population as a whole. A customer base weighted so heavily towards older people could, in the long run, threaten the survival of the mutual finance sector itself.

Grammar points
N포인트percentage point
A percentage point is the arithmetic gap between two percentages, not a percentage change. Going from 32.2 percent to 38.1 percent is a rise of 5.9 percentage points, but a rise of about 18 percent in relative terms — two true statements with very different sizes. Korean writes 포인트 (or %포인트) precisely to keep the two apart, and translating it as 'percent' silently changes the claim.
Example:
Support rose by three percentage points.
N에 달하다 / N에 그치다to reach as much as N / to stop at only N
A matched pair that carries judgement as well as measurement: 달하다 says a figure is large for what it is, 그치다 that it is small. Setting them against each other in one sentence — 45.6%에 달한 반면 14.1%에 그쳤다 — tells the reader which way to read the imbalance without the writer stating an opinion outright.
Support reached 70 percent, whereas opposition stopped at 12.
-(으)ㄹ 수 있다may ~, could ~
Besides 'can' in the sense of ability, this expresses possibility — and that is its job in the closing sentence here. 위협할 수 있다 says the customer structure *could* threaten the sector, not that it is doing so. Business analysis leans on this ending because the risk being described has not yet materialised, and a reader who takes it as a statement of fact will overstate what the figures show.
Example:
This problem could grow larger.
