Sports Festival for Children in Care Opens in Gwangju, With Some 1,000 Taking Part

보건복지부가 8월 10일 광주 호남대학교에서 제26회 보호대상아동 꿈나무 체육대회를 열었습니다. 대회는 12일까지 사흘 동안 이어집니다. 올해는 전국 아동양육시설의 보호아동과 인솔자, 자립준비청년 등 1000여 명이 참여합니다. 참가자들은 축구와 배드민턴, 줄넘기 세 종목에서 지역 대표팀끼리 경기를 합니다. 개회식에는 후원자와 지역주민 등 300여 명이 와서 아이들을 응원했습니다.

Translation

On August 10, the Ministry of Health and Welfare opened the 26th Kkumnamu Sports Festival for children in protective care at Honam University in Gwangju. The festival runs for three days, until the 12th. This year some 1,000 people are taking part, including children in care at child-rearing facilities nationwide, their supervisors, and young people preparing for independent living. The participants compete between regional representative teams in three events: football, badminton and jump rope. At the opening ceremony, some 300 people came, including sponsors and local residents, and cheered the children on.

Placed after a list, 등 says the list is not complete — others of the same kind are included. 보호아동과 인솔자, 자립준비청년 등 1000여 명 means those three groups make up part of the thousand, not all of it. Leaving 등 out of a translation quietly turns a partial list into a full one, which is why news writing is careful with it.

Example: 사과와 배, 포도 등 과일을 샀습니다.

N 동안for N (a length of time)

After a noun of duration, 동안 says how long something lasts: 사흘 동안 = 'for three days'. It needs a length, not a point in time — 사흘 동안 works, but a date like 12일 동안 would mean 'for twelve days', not 'on the 12th'. With a verb, use -는 동안 ('while ~ing') instead.

Example: 일주일 동안 비가 내렸습니다.

It rained for a week.

N끼리among N, between N (of the same kind)

끼리 attaches to a plural or group noun to say the action happens among members of that same group and no one else: 지역 대표팀끼리 경기를 합니다 = the regional teams play each other. It carries no particle after it, and it always implies sameness — 친구끼리 is 'among friends', never 'with a friend'.

Example: 학생들끼리 이야기를 나눴습니다.
