POSTECH's Professor Han Sé-gwang's team and Konkuk University's Professor Kim Hyé-min's team announced on August 10 that they have developed a wearable patch which closes wounds and aids tissue regeneration using only indoor lighting and sunlight, with no battery or external power source. At its core is a light-emitting particle that converts light of a wide range of wavelengths into red light of around 640 nanometres, the range suited to wound treatment. This red light activates a photosensitiser, which weaves together the collagen at the edges of the wound to close the incision, and at the same time promotes the proliferation of fibroblasts, driving tissue regeneration. In animal-model experiments, 12 hours of wear confirmed closure and regeneration effects. In a preliminary human evaluation with healthy adults, just 9 hours of wear produced improved skin elasticity and reduced redness. The findings were published in the online edition of the international journal Advanced Materials.
