Seventeen Wild Species Recorded in a Restored Valley at 팔공산국립공원

국립공원공단이 팔공산국립공원 도학동 계곡을 복원했습니다. 이곳은 약 70년간 불법 기도터로 쓰이던 곳입니다. 공단은 불법시설물 92개를 철거하고 폐기물 약 356t을 처리해 지난 5월 복원 작업을 마쳤습니다. 6월 초부터 8월 초까지 무인센서카메라로 관찰한 결과, 포유류 6종과 조류 11종 등 야생동물 17종이 계곡을 이동하거나 쉬는 모습이 확인됐습니다. 그중에는 멸종위기 야생생물 Ⅱ급인 담비와 참매도 있었습니다.

Translation

국립공원공단 has restored 도학동 valley in 팔공산국립공원. The place had been used as an unauthorised prayer site for about seventy years. The agency removed 92 unauthorised structures and disposed of about 356 tonnes of waste, finishing the restoration work last May. Observation with unmanned sensor cameras from early June to early August recorded 17 species of wild animals moving through the valley or resting there, six mammal species and eleven bird species. Among them were 담비 and 참매, both designated as Class II endangered wild species.

약 goes in front of a number and marks it as approximate. It is written as one word with a space before the figure, and it never takes a particle of its own. News writing uses it whenever a figure was estimated rather than counted, so seeing 약 is a signal that the number should not be quoted as exact. 쓰이다 is the passive of 쓰다, to use, and the (으)로 before it names what the thing served as. Use -로 after a vowel or ㄹ and -으로 after other consonants. The passive matters here: the article says the valley was used as a prayer site without saying who used it, which is how Korean reporting states a long-standing situation with no single actor to name.

그중에among them, of those

그중에 points back to a group already mentioned and picks something out of it, so it needs a preceding set to refer to — here the seventeen species. It is built from 그 (that) and 중 (middle, among), and adding 는 gives 그중에는, which marks the group as the topic and puts the emphasis on what follows. Korean prefers this to repeating the noun, so following the reference back is part of reading a list.

Example: 그중에는 멸종위기 야생생물 Ⅱ급인 담비와 참매도 있었습니다.
