Korea's National Parks Step Up Summer Water Safety at 249 Spots

국립공원공단은 6월부터 8월까지 물놀이 안전을 지키고 있습니다. 국립공원의 물놀이 장소 249곳을 살펴봅니다. 물놀이는 즐겁지만 위험할 수 있습니다. 그래서 술을 마시고 물에 들어가면 안 됩니다. 어린이는 어른과 함께 물놀이를 해야 합니다.

Translation

The Korea National Park Service is protecting water safety from June to August. It checks 249 water-play spots in the national parks. Playing in the water is fun, but it can be dangerous. So you must not go into the water after drinking alcohol. Children must play in the water together with an adult.

Grammar points

-고 있습니다is / are ~ing

Attach -고 있습니다 to a verb stem to say the action is going on now. It is the formal polite form of -고 있다, so it fits news writing: 지키다 → 지키고 있습니다 ('is protecting').

Example: 동생은 지금 도서관에서 책을 읽고 있습니다.

My younger brother is reading a book at the library right now.

-지만but, although

-지만 joins two clauses and shows that the second one goes against the first. It attaches straight to the stem of a verb or adjective: 즐겁다 → 즐겁지만 ('it is fun, but…').

Example: 이 옷은 예쁘지만 값이 조금 비쌉니다.

These clothes are pretty, but the price is a little high.

-(으)ㄹ 수 있습니다can, may (possible)

This form covers both ability ('can do') and possibility ('may happen'). Use -ㄹ 수 있습니다 after a vowel (가다 → 갈 수 있습니다) and -을 수 있습니다 after a consonant (먹다 → 먹을 수 있습니다). With an adjective like 위험하다 it means 'it can be dangerous'.

Example: 여름에는 비가 갑자기 올 수 있습니다.

In summer it may suddenly rain.

N부터 N까지from N to N

부터 marks where something starts and 까지 marks where it ends. The pair is most common with times and dates: 6월부터 8월까지 means 'from June to August'.

Example: 저는 월요일부터 금요일까지 학교에 갑니다.

I go to school from Monday to Friday.
