위페르·이혜영 낭독극 '새' 서울 공연…한강 소설을 무대로

Translation
'Sae' (Bird), a reading play based on Part 1 of Nobel laureate Han Kang's novel We Do Not Part, was performed on October 10 and 11 at the main theater of Mary Hall at Sogang University in Mapo-gu, Seoul. Invited by the Seoul Performing Arts Festival (SPAF), it was directed by the French director Julie Deliquet, with the actors Isabelle Huppert and Lee Hye-young as readers. The lines moved between two languages, French and Korean. The play premiered in July at the Avignon Festival in France, but in Seoul it moved from the Cour d'honneur of the Palais des Papes, an outdoor venue with about 1,900 seats, to an indoor theater of a little over 400 seats. In Avignon, Han Kang herself appeared on stage by surprise to give the final reading, but in Seoul a third-year middle school student took over that part. Huppert said, "Jeju 4·3 is a sad part of Korean history I knew nothing about, but it is a history of all of us, with universal value."
