Grammar points
N에 오르다to rise to N (a rank)
With a rank or a list, 오르다 ('to go up') is the verb Korean uses instead of 'to be': 1위에 올랐습니다 = 'took first place'. The particle is 에, marking the position reached. You will also meet 정상에 오르다 ('reach the top') in exactly this kind of chart or ranking news.
Example: 그 노래는 지난주에 1위에 올랐습니다.
That song rose to number one last week.
-(으)러in order to (go / come and do)
-(으)러 attaches to a verb stem to give the purpose of a movement, and it only works with verbs of going, coming or setting out: 구하러 떠나다 = 'to set off in order to rescue'. Use -(으)러 after a stem ending in a consonant and -러 after a vowel. For purposes that are not about movement, use -기 위해 instead.
Example: 저는 친구를 만나러 서울에 갑니다.
I am going to Seoul to meet a friend.
N보다than N
N보다 marks what something is being compared against, and it comes before the adjective or verb that carries the comparison: 전작보다 좋았습니다 = 'was better than the previous film'. Korean does not change the adjective itself the way English adds '-er', so 보다 alone does the work; add 더 ('more') for emphasis.
Example: 오늘은 어제보다 시원합니다.
Today is cooler than yesterday.
