다누리, 팰컨9 상단부의 달 충돌 전후 포착…현재까지 유일

Danuri Photographs the Moon Before and After a Falcon 9 Stage Hit It — So Far the Only Probe to Do So

Translation

The Korea AeroSpace Administration announced that the lunar orbiter Danuri photographed the scene before and after the upper stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket struck the Moon. The upper stage hit near the Moon's Einstein crater at 3:34 p.m. on August 5, at 2.43 km per second. Danuri, which is operated by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, began photographing about 30 minutes before the impact and shot the same area a total of eight times from a distance of roughly 340-350 km. Danuri is so far the only probe to have photographed this area immediately after the impact, but that is the result of its orbit and position happening to line up at the time, rather than of any difference in camera performance. This impact is expected to have formed an impact crater some 20-30 m in diameter, but its exact size and shape are to be analyzed from here on.

Vocabulary

  • 궤도선명사 (noun)orbiter (a craft that circles a body rather than landing)
  • 분화구명사 (noun)crater
  • 충돌하다동사 (verb)to collide, crash into
  • 운용하다동사 (verb)to operate, run (a craft, system or fund)
  • 탐사선명사 (noun)space probe, exploration craft
  • 맞아떨어지다동사 (verb)to line up exactly, fall into place as needed
  • 충돌구명사 (noun)impact crater (the pit an impact leaves)
  • 지름명사 (noun)diameter

Grammar points

-(으)ㄴ/는데~, and about that… (setting up the next clause)

-는데 ends a clause that supplies background for what follows, and depending on context that background reads as a mild contrast. In the article, 다누리가 유일한데, 이는 (…) 결과입니다 states a fact and then immediately qualifies it. Use -는데 after a verb, -(으)ㄴ데 after a descriptive verb, and -인데 after a noun. Unlike -지만, it does not insist on opposition; it simply hands the topic over to the next clause.

Example: 어제 그 식당에 갔는데, 사람이 정말 많았습니다.

I went to that restaurant yesterday, and there were really a lot of people.

-(으)ㄹ 것으로 예상되다is expected to ~

The future modifier -(으)ㄹ 것 plus 으로 예상되다 reports an expectation without naming who holds it, which is how Korean science and economics writing marks a figure as not yet confirmed. 생겼을 것으로 예상되지만 therefore says the crater is estimated, not measured — replacing it with a plain 생겼습니다 would upgrade an estimate into a fact. 전망되다 and 추정되다 work the same way.

Example: 올해 관광객은 지난해보다 늘어날 것으로 예상됩니다.

The number of tourists this year is expected to rise above last year's.

-(으)ㄹ 예정이다is scheduled/due to ~

Attaches to a verb stem to report something already planned but not yet done. It states a schedule rather than a wish, so it is the neutral form for institutional plans; compare -(으)려고 하다 ('intend to', personal) and -기로 하다 ('have decided to', the moment of deciding). News articles usually close on this form when the story continues past the reporting date.

Example: 새 도서관은 내년 3월에 문을 열 예정입니다.

The new library is due to open in March next year.
