Grammar points

-부터from (a starting point in time or place)

-부터 attaches to a noun and marks where something starts. With dates it is the standard way to say when a change takes effect, and news about prices, laws and schedules uses it constantly. Do not confuse it with -에서, which marks a starting place for movement: 9월 1일부터 is 'from September 1', while 서울에서 is 'from Seoul'. This lesson uses it three times, once for each company.

Example: 동원F&B가 9월 1일부터 참치캔류 가격을 평균 9% 올립니다.

Dongwon F&B raises canned tuna prices by an average of 9 percent from September 1.

N 등N and others, such as N

N 등 ends a list while signalling that the list is not complete. It matters here because the article never says how many products go up — it says 일부 제품, some products, and then gives 오미자차 등 as an example. If you drop 등 when translating, you turn an example into the full list and claim more than the source does.

Example: 오미자차 등 일부 음료가 대상에 포함됐습니다.

Some drinks such as omija tea are included.

N을/를 이유로 들다to cite N as the reason

들다 has many meanings; here it is 'to raise' in the sense of putting something forward, so N을/를 이유로 들다 is 'to give N as the reason'. News writing prefers this to 때문입니다 because it keeps the reason attributed to the speaker rather than stated as fact. The company said these were the reasons — the article is not confirming that they are.

Example: 회사는 고유가와 고환율, 포장재 가격 급등을 이유로 들었습니다.

The company cited high oil prices, a high exchange rate and a sharp rise in packaging costs as its reasons.
