Translation

From last year to March this year, 126 teachers were found to have been disciplined for trading exam questions with instructors at private academies. Of these, 18 received heavy discipline: 14 were suspended, 1 was demoted and 3 were dismissed. The remaining 108 received light discipline, 86 of them a pay cut and 22 a reprimand. By region, Seoul had the most at 79, followed by 경기 with 37 and 인천 with 1, so about 93 percent of them were teachers working in the Seoul metropolitan area. Private education companies are said to have approached teachers by getting hold of the list of writers of EBS textbooks, or through personal and school connections.

Grammar points

-(으)ㄴ 것으로 나타나다was found to, turned out to

This is how Korean reporting presents a figure that came out of an investigation or a data release, rather than from a person speaking. 것으로 packages the clause before it, and 나타나다 says it emerged. Because no speaker is named, the form quietly signals that the source is a document, which is why statistics stories are full of it.

Example: 징계를 받은 교원이 126명으로 나타났습니다.

126 teachers were found to have been disciplined.

N 가운데among N, out of N

가운데 follows a group to pick out part of it, with a space before it. When the group has already been named in the previous sentence, Korean often shortens it to 이 가운데, 'of these' — a link between sentences rather than inside one. That is how a report walks down from a total to its parts.

Example: 이 가운데 18명은 중징계를 받았습니다.

Of these, 18 received heavy discipline.

-고and / and then

-고 links clauses in the order given, attaching straight to the stem with no tense of its own. In a list of figures it does the work English does with a comma: 서울이 79명으로 가장 많았고, 경기 37명 sets Seoul down first and lets the rest follow. The tense sits on the final verb of the sentence.

Example: 서울이 79명으로 가장 많았고, 경기는 37명이었습니다.

Seoul had the most at 79, and 경기 had 37.
