The 국가유산청 and the 한국전통문화대학교 built a temporary shelter for restoring the pylon of the Ramesseum in Luxor, Egypt, and held a completion ceremony at 9 a.m. local time on September 3. The shelter measures 42 metres by 26 metres, with a total floor area of 1,092 square metres and columns 21 metres high. Putting up a large-scale temporary protective structure like this in order to restore a piece of cultural heritage is the first attempt of its kind in Egypt. The two Korean bodies have been running the project together with Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities since 2023, on a five-year plan. During the excavation and the survey of the stone pieces, they also identified a piece carved with the cartouche of Ramesses II and with a new place name that proves the extent of his territorial expansion. By 2027 they plan to take the pylon apart and, along with that, record the stone pieces and carry out conservation treatment on the stone.
