Duty-Free Goods Can Now Be Exchanged in Korea by Parcel

외국에 나갈 때 면세점에서 물건을 삽니다. 그 물건을 바꾸고 싶을 때가 있습니다. 전에는 다시 외국에 나가야 했지만, 이제는 나가지 않아도 됩니다. 2026년 7월 1일부터 한국에 돌아와서 택배로 바꿀 수 있습니다. 800달러까지 같은 물건으로만 바꿀 수 있습니다.

Translation

People buy things at duty-free shops when they travel abroad. Sometimes they want to exchange one of those items. Before, you had to travel abroad again, but now you do not have to. From July 1, 2026, you can come back to Korea and exchange the item by parcel delivery. You can exchange goods worth up to 800 dollars, and only for the same item.

Grammar points

-지만but

Attach -지만 to a verb or adjective stem to put two contrasting facts in one sentence. With a past-tense stem it becomes -았/었지만: 했지만 = "had to, but…". In the article, 나가야 했지만 contrasts the old rule with the new one.

Example: 한국말은 어렵지만 재미있습니다.

Korean is hard, but it is fun.

-부터 / -까지from / up to

-부터 marks where something starts, and -까지 marks where it stops. They work for both time and amount, and often appear as a pair. The article uses 7월 1일부터 (starting July 1) and 800달러까지 (up to 800 dollars).

Example: 월요일부터 금요일까지 일합니다.

I work from Monday to Friday.

-(으)ㄹ 수 있습니다can, be able to

Add -(으)ㄹ 수 있습니다 to a verb stem to say that something is possible or allowed. Stems ending in a vowel take -ㄹ 수 있습니다 (바꾸다 → 바꿀 수 있습니다). The negative is -(으)ㄹ 수 없습니다.

Example: 저는 한국말을 조금 할 수 있습니다.

I can speak a little Korean.

-아서/어서and then; so

-아서/어서 joins two clauses. Here it shows order: the first action happens and the second follows from it — 돌아와서 바꾸다 = "come back and then exchange it". The same ending can also give a reason.

Example: 집에 돌아와서 밥을 먹습니다.

I come home and then eat.
