독도 해역서 신종 와편모조류 발견…'독도엔시스' 이름 붙었다

A New Dinoflagellate Species Found in the Waters Off Dokdo Is Named 'dokdoensis'

Translation

The Advanced Institute of Convergence Technology, a body jointly funded by Gyeonggi Province and Seoul National University, has found a new dinoflagellate species living attached to the surface of seaweed in the waters off Dokdo and named it 'Gambierdiscus dokdoensis'. It is the first case of a Gambierdiscus organism being formally classified and recorded in Korean waters. According to the institute on 22 September, the team collected the dinoflagellate from seaweed at a depth of about 20 metres near Hokdomgul off Dokdo in September 2024. Dinoflagellates are single-celled organisms that move with two flagella, and this species is a bottom-attached type that lives on the surface of seaweed. An organism of the same lineage was reported off the coast of Japan about ten years ago as 'Gambierdiscus sp. type 3' on the basis of genetic information, but no formal scientific name was given. The team compared the cell shape and genetic lineage of the culture obtained at Dokdo and classified it as a separate new species. Some species of the genus Gambierdiscus are linked to the production of toxic substances such as ciguatoxin and the genus is watched internationally as a harmful subtropical group, but whether dokdoensis is toxic has not yet been confirmed.

Grammar points

-아/어 붙어 사는 NN that lives attached to something

붙다 is to stick or attach, and 붙어 사는 combines it with 살다 to describe how an organism lives: 해조류 표면에 붙어 사는 생물, an organism that lives attached to the surface of seaweed. The -아/어 form chains the two verbs into one state.

Example: 차세대융합기술연구원이 독도 해역에서 해조류 표면에 붙어 사는 신종 와편모조류를 발견했습니다.

The Advanced Institute of Convergence Technology found a new dinoflagellate species living attached to the surface of seaweed in the waters off Dokdo.

-았/었지만 -지 않았다it was ... , but it was not ...

This pair reports a partial result: 보고됐지만 학명은 부여되지 않았다, it was reported, but no scientific name was given. Research writing leans on it to mark exactly how far earlier work went, which is what makes the new claim possible.

Example: 같은 계통의 생물은 10여 년 전 일본 연안에서 유전자 정보를 토대로 보고됐지만 정식 학명은 부여되지 않았습니다.

An organism of the same lineage was reported off Japan about ten years ago on the basis of genetic information, but no formal scientific name was given.

-(으)ㄴ지 확인되지 않았다it has not been confirmed whether ...

-(으)ㄴ지 poses the open question and 확인되지 않았다 states that it is still open: 독성이 있는지 확인되지 않았다, whether it is toxic has not been confirmed. Keeping this sentence is what stops a reader assuming the new species is dangerous.

Example: 독도엔시스에 독성이 있는지는 아직 확인되지 않았습니다.

Whether dokdoensis is toxic has not yet been confirmed.
