84% of 추석 Train Seats Are Booked; Korail Staff Buy Scalped Tickets as 'Mystery Shoppers'

Translation

Korail ran advance booking for 추석 train tickets for seven days from 3 to 11 September, and of the 2.14 million seats on offer, 1.8 million were sold, a booking rate of 84%. Over the past three years the holiday booking rate had been around 60%. By train type, the KTX sold 1,479,000 tickets for a rate of 92.7%, while ordinary trains sold 321,000 for 58.6%. Seats that were not booked can be bought from 3 p.m. on the 11th through the '코레일+' app, the Korail website, station counters and ticket machines. To stop ticket scalping, Korail uses a 'mystery shopper' method in which staff buy scalped tickets themselves on 당근마켓, 번개장터 and similar sites to obtain the sellers' details. Anyone who reports a scalped-ticket sale receives a 50% discount coupon on train fares.
