Pilot Project Helping Separated Children Return to Their Birth Families Expands to South Gyeongsang

보건복지부는 8월 4일 ’초기보호아동 원가정 복귀 지원 시범사업’에 새로 참여할 지역으로 경상남도가 선정됐다고 발표했습니다. 이 사업은 2025년 7월부터 인천광역시에서 시행돼 왔으며, 이번 선정으로 시행 지역은 인천과 경남 두 곳으로 늘었습니다. 경상남도는 2026년 8월부터 사업을 시작합니다. ’초기보호’는 학대나 부모의 사망 등으로 인해 원가정에서 분리된 아동이 정식으로 보호대상아동으로 결정되기 전까지 거치는 기간입니다. 보건복지부에 따르면 이 기간은 원가정 복귀 가능성과 아동의 심리 회복을 좌우하는 중요한 시기입니다. 시범사업은 이 기간에 심리검사와 트라우마 치료, 가족 회복 프로그램 등을 지원합니다. 인천은 2026년 상반기에 초기보호 대상 아동 71명 전원에게 심리검사와 상담을 제공했습니다.
Translation
On August 4, the Ministry of Health and Welfare announced that South Gyeongsang Province has been selected as the newest region to join its pilot project supporting the return of children in early protection to their birth families. The project has been running in Incheon since July 2025, and with this selection the number of regions carrying it out has risen to two: Incheon and South Gyeongsang. South Gyeongsang will begin the project in August 2026. "Early protection" is the period a child separated from their birth family because of abuse, the death of a parent or similar reasons goes through before being formally designated a child in need of state protection. According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, this period is a crucial time that shapes both the chances of returning to the birth family and the child's psychological recovery. During this period the pilot project provides support such as psychological assessments, trauma treatment and family recovery programmes. In the first half of 2026, Incheon provided psychological assessments and counselling to all 71 children in early protection.
