도산대지급금 확대…20일부터 임금 6개월분까지
Korea Expands State-Paid Back Wages for Workers of Failed Companies to Six Months
Part of the August 20, 2026 daily edition
Translation
There is a scheme in which the state pays wages on behalf of workers who did not receive them because their company closed down. This scheme is called 도산대지급금. From 20 August, wages can be received not for the last 3 months but for up to the last 6 months. The amount one person can receive also rises from 21 million won to 31.5 million won. The Ministry of Employment and Labor said on the 19th that the amended Wage Claim Guarantee Act and its enforcement rules containing this content take effect from the 20th. However, the amount actually received varies according to the ceilings set by age group and by month.

Grammar points
-아서/어서because ~, so ~
Attached to a verb or adjective stem, -아서/어서 gives a reason for what follows. The vowel is 아 after ㅏ/ㅗ and 어 elsewhere, and 하다 becomes 해서. Unlike English 'because', the reason clause comes first: 회사가 문을 닫아서 — 'because the company closed down'. A command or suggestion cannot follow -아서/어서; use -(으)니까 for that.
Example: 비가 와서 우산을 샀습니다.
It rained, so I bought an umbrella.
-(으)ㄹ 수 있다can ~, be able to ~
-(으)ㄹ 수 있다 attaches to a verb stem and says that something is possible or permitted. 을 수 있다 follows a final consonant, ㄹ 수 있다 follows a vowel. The negative is -(으)ㄹ 수 없다. The article uses it for what a worker is now entitled to: 받을 수 있습니다 — 'can receive'.
Example: 이 카드로 지하철을 탈 수 있습니다.
You can ride the subway with this card.
N에 따라depending on N, according to N
After a noun, 에 따라 says that what follows changes with, or is decided by, that noun. It is the standard phrase in official and news writing for a rule whose result varies case by case: 상한액에 따라 달라집니다 — 'it varies according to the ceiling amount'. The related N에 따르면 means 'according to N (a source)' and is a different use.
Example: 나이에 따라 요금이 다릅니다.
The fare differs depending on age.
