8월 1일~17일 영화 관객 1340만 명…지난해 같은 기간보다 68.3% 증가

13.4 Million Cinema Admissions in Korea Over August 1-17, Up 68.3% From a Year Earlier

Translation

According to the Korea Film Council's integrated computing network, total cinema admissions from August 1 to 17 were tallied at about 13.4 million. That is 68.3 percent more than the 7.96 million over the same period last year, and the highest level for the same period since 2019, before COVID-19. Over the same stretch, the two films 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' and 'The Odyssey' took revenue shares of 43.5 percent and 40.2 percent respectively, coming to 87.7 percent together. According to CGV's data, 15.7 percent of repeat moviegoers between July 29 and August 9 saw 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' more than once. The analysis is that large blockbusters were hits one after another, and that on top of that, extreme heat and the holiday season drove demand for so-called 극캉스 — heading to a cool cinema.

Grammar points

N에 따르면according to N

N에 따르면 names the source a statement rests on, and it opens a huge share of Korean news sentences. It signals that what follows is being reported, not asserted by the writer. This lesson uses it twice on purpose, because the two figures come from different bodies over different dates: the national tally from 영화진흥위원회, the repeat-viewing share from CGV. Reading the phrase carefully is how you keep two statistics from being mistaken for one.

Example: CGV 데이터에 따르면 N차 관람객 가운데 15.7%가 이 영화를 반복 관람했습니다.

According to CGV's data, 15.7 percent of repeat moviegoers saw this film more than once.

N에 달하다 / N에 그치다to reach as much as N / to stop at only N

These two verbs are a matched pair for framing a quantity. 달하다 says the figure got all the way up to N and reads as large; 그치다 says it stopped there and reads as small. The number itself is neutral, so the choice of verb is where the writer's judgement enters — 87.7%에 달했습니다 presents that share as striking. Both take 에, not 을/를.

Example: 두 영화의 매출액 점유율은 모두 87.7%에 달했습니다.

The two films' revenue shares came to 87.7 percent together.

-(으)로 풀이되다/분석되다it is interpreted / analysed as

Korean news uses this passive to offer a cause without naming who is offering it. 분석되다 leans on data, 풀이되다 on interpretation, and both let a reporter suggest a reason while stopping short of asserting it as fact. That hedge is doing real work in this lesson: the ticket counts are measured, but why people bought them is not.

Example: '극캉스' 수요가 늘어난 것으로 분석됩니다.

The analysis is that demand for 'geukcanse' — going to the cinema to escape the heat — has grown.
