스위스 연구팀이 땅에 면 속옷을 묻어서 흙이 얼마나 건강한지 알아보는 연구를 했습니다. 연구팀은 이 방법을 ’속옷 지수’라고 불렀습니다. 시민 1000명이 우편으로 받은 속옷을 땅속 8cm 깊이에 묻었습니다. 그리고 30일 뒤와 60일 뒤에 속옷을 한 쌍씩 꺼냈습니다. 흙 속의 작은 생물들이 면을 먹어서 속옷이 조금씩 없어집니다. 2개월 뒤 개인 정원에서는 평균 약 58%, 잔디밭에서는 약 40%가 분해됐습니다.

A Swiss research team did a study that buries cotton underpants in the ground to find out how healthy the soil is. The team called this method the 'Underpants Index'. 1,000 citizens buried the underpants they received by post 8 cm deep in the ground. Then they dug up one pair after 30 days and the other after 60 days. Tiny living things in the soil eat the cotton, so the underpants slowly disappear. After two months, about 58% had broken down on average in private gardens, and about 40% on lawns.
