Venomous Jellyfish Appear About Two Weeks Early at Korea's Summer Beaches

여름 바다에 독이 있는 해파리가 많이 나타나고 있습니다. 올해는 지난해보다 약 2주 빨리 나타났습니다. 이 해파리는 독이 강해서 쏘이면 아주 위험할 수 있습니다. 해파리에 쏘이면 바로 물 밖으로 나와서 깨끗한 바닷물로 씻어야 합니다. 많이 아프거나 몸이 이상하면 바로 병원에 가야 합니다.

Translation

Jellyfish with venom are appearing in large numbers in the summer sea. This year they appeared about two weeks earlier than last year. This jellyfish has strong venom, so a sting can be very dangerous. If you are stung by a jellyfish, you must get out of the water right away and wash the spot with clean seawater. If it hurts a lot or you feel unwell, you must go to a hospital right away.

Grammar points

-고 있습니다is/are ~ing

Attach -고 있습니다 to a verb stem to say something is happening now or continuing these days. 나타나다 (to appear) becomes 나타나고 있습니다 (is appearing). It is the polite formal form used in news writing.

Example: 해파리가 많이 나타나고 있습니다.

A lot of jellyfish are appearing.

-아서/어서 (해서)so, because; and then

-아서/어서 joins two clauses. Most often the first clause is the reason and the second is the result: 강하다 (to be strong) becomes 강해서 (because it is strong) — note that words ending in 하다 turn into 해서, not 하아서. It can also simply link two actions in order, as in 물 밖으로 나와서 씻습니다 (get out of the water and then wash). No past-tense marker ever goes before -아서/어서.

Example: 해파리는 독이 강해서 위험합니다.

-(으)ㄹ 수 있습니다can, may

-(으)ㄹ 수 있습니다 means 'can' or 'may'. After a consonant use -을 수 있습니다, after a vowel or ㄹ use -ㄹ 수 있습니다. Here it shows possibility: something might happen, not that it always does. Remember to leave a space before 수.

Example: 해파리에 쏘이면 아주 위험할 수 있습니다.

If you are stung by a jellyfish, it can be very dangerous.
