K Auction announced on 20 September that its September sale, to be held on 30 September at its headquarters in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, will offer an album collecting 207 illustrations that appeared in the Seoul Shinmun newspaper between 1956 and 1959. The estimate is 260 to 400 million won. The works are by 61 artists — including Park Soo-keun, Chang Ucchin, Kim Ki-chang, Park Re-hyun, Park Seo-bo, Kim Tschang-yeul, Lee Ungno and Chun Kyung-ja — who were active in groups such as the Baekwoo Society, the Modern Art Association, the Contemporary Artists Association and the Sinjohyeong group and sought to plant modernism and abstract art in Korean painting. A K Auction official explained that a collector had carefully written each artist's name beneath every illustration, and that the range of artists, the content of the pictures and the way they were kept show a collection assembled with great care. The official added that because many works have a clearly identified year of production — 47 from 1956, 38 from 1957, 47 from 1958 and 15 from 1959 — the album has very high value as historical material. The sale offers 117 lots worth about 11 billion won in all, and a preview runs until the 30th at K Auction's exhibition hall.
