PC방에서는 돈을 내고 컴퓨터 게임을 할 수 있습니다. 1998년에 ’스타크래프트’라는 게임이 나왔습니다. 이 게임은 아주 인기가 많아서 PC방이 빠르게 늘었습니다. 하지만 지금은 집에서도 인터넷을 쓸 수 있습니다. 그래서 PC방은 문을 닫거나 힘든 경쟁을 하고 있습니다.

Translation

At a PC bang, you pay money and can play computer games. In 1998, a game called StarCraft came out. The game was very popular, so PC bangs increased quickly. But now you can use the internet at home too. So PC bangs are closing down or facing tough competition.

-(으)ㄹ 수 있습니다can, be able to

Attach -ㄹ 수 있습니다 to a verb stem ending in a vowel, and -을 수 있습니다 to one ending in a consonant. It says the action is possible. The opposite is -(으)ㄹ 수 없습니다 ('cannot').

Example: 저는 한국 음식을 만들 수 있습니다.

This connects two clauses where the first is the reason for the second. Use -아서 after the vowels ㅏ/ㅗ and -어서 elsewhere. Note that the first clause never carries a past-tense marker, even when the event was in the past.

The weather was nice, so I went to the park.

-고 있습니다is doing (ongoing)

Attach -고 있습니다 to a verb stem for an action happening right now or continuing over a period. It is the polite formal form of -고 있다.

Example: 동생은 지금 방에서 게임을 하고 있습니다.

My younger brother is playing a game in his room right now.
