KAIST Develops 'PDM' Memtransistor That Remembers Its Settings After Power-Off

KAIST 최신현 석좌교수 연구팀이 인공지능 반도체 소자 ’프로그래머블 동적 멤트랜지스터(PDM)’를 개발했습니다. 이 소자는 데이터의 변화 속도에 따라 반응 시간을 스스로 조절하는 한편, 전원이 꺼진 뒤에도 설정된 특성을 그대로 기억합니다. 시간에 따라 변하는 데이터를 처리하는 기능과 정보를 저장하는 기능을 하나의 트랜지스터에 결합한 구조입니다. 실험에서 전류 회복 시간은 0.7밀리초에서 3.8밀리초까지 조절됐습니다. 고정된 반응 특성 하나만 사용했을 때 정규화 평균제곱오차는 0.29였던 데 반해, 여러 특성을 함께 활용하자 0.0068까지 낮아졌습니다. 이 연구 결과는 지난 7월 국제 학술지 ’네이처 커뮤니케이션스’에 게재됐습니다.

Translation

A research team led by Distinguished Professor Shinhyun Choi at KAIST has developed an AI semiconductor device called the Programmable Dynamic Memtransistor (PDM). The device adjusts its response time by itself according to how fast the data is changing, while also retaining the characteristics it has been set to even after the power is switched off. It has a structure that combines, within a single transistor, the function of processing data that changes over time and the function of storing information. In experiments, the current recovery time could be tuned from 0.7 milliseconds to 3.8 milliseconds. When only one fixed response characteristic was used, the normalised mean squared error was 0.29, whereas once several characteristics were used together it fell to 0.0068. The findings were published last July in the international journal Nature Communications.

Attached to a verb stem, -는 한편 presents two things that hold at the same time: the clause before it and the clause after it are both true of the same subject. It belongs to formal written Korean, especially news writing, and is close to 'while also doing X' in English. Attached directly to a verb stem, -자 says that the second event followed immediately upon the first, often as its result. It is written-style and neutral in tone, and the first clause takes no tense marker. In the article, 활용하자 means 'once several characteristics were used together', with the drop in error following straight away.

Example: 온도가 올라가자 반응 시간이 짧아졌습니다.

As soon as the temperature rose, the response time got shorter.

N에 따라according to N, depending on N

N에 따라 marks the thing that something else varies with: as N changes, the result changes with it. It is standard in formal and technical writing. The article uses it twice — 변화 속도에 따라 (the response time varies with how fast the data changes) and 시간에 따라 변하는 데이터 (data that changes over time).

Example: 계절에 따라 전기 사용량이 크게 달라집니다.
