When using an airport over the Chuseok holiday, you can now confirm your identity with a mobile ID issued to your smartphone instead of a physical card. Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation said on 23 September that mobile IDs can be used at airports and in financial, public and private services wherever identification is required, including age verification at convenience stores and shops. A mobile ID has the same legal force as a physical ID, and mobile resident registration cards, driving licences, veterans' registration cards and disability registration cards are currently in service. They can be issued through the 'Korea Mobile ID' app and through private apps that offer the mobile ID service. A user's identity information is stored in a secure area of the smartphone, and where only adult status needs to be checked, the holder can choose to present just that piece of information without handing over other personal data. The corporation plans to widen the places where it is accepted across the public, financial and private sectors and to develop everyday services such as applying it to discounted urban railway tickets for older people.
