With unapproved drone flights happening one after another around Jeju Airport, Korea Airports Corporation's Jeju Airport put up banners in the Jeju dialect at 36 places inside and outside the passenger terminal on 23 September. At about 10:54 a.m. on 21 September an unidentified drone was detected in Aewol-eup, Jeju City, and take-offs and landings at Jeju Airport were halted for 19 minutes, so some flights were delayed or could not land. Drone detections around Jeju Airport have already reached 113 this year, with 30 in September alone — more than double the 13 in the same period last year. Last year 165 illegal drones were detected over the whole year. In the control zone within a 9.3 km radius of Jeju Airport, covering Aewol, Dodu, Yongdam and Samyang, flight approval must be obtained before flying a drone, and small hobby drones are no exception. Flying without approval can draw a fine of up to 5 million won under the Aviation Safety Act.
