Translation

With Malbok, the last of the three hot days, falling on August 14 and the Liberation Day holiday following it, the big supermarkets are running discounts. E-Mart is holding its 'Goraeit Festa' for four days, from August 14 to 17, with up to 50 percent off fresh food, ready meals, alcohol, daily necessities and back-to-school goods. Jeju flatfish sashimi, 240g, costs 14,990 won if you collect Shinsegae Points and pay with an event card. For 'Fresh Eggs', a domestic 30-egg pack, the store has secured 200,000 trays — more than five times the usual — and is selling them at 6,280 won. Lotte Mart is running its 'Second Tongkeun Day' until the 17th, with whole eel at 4,990 won. Homeplus reopened 67 of its stores on the 13th and is discounting every Korean beef item by up to 50 percent.

Grammar points

N부터 N까지from N to N

The standard pair for a range, in time or space. Note that Korean marks the end point with 까지 rather than leaving it to be inferred, so both edges are always explicit: 14일부터 17일까지 is four days, the 17th included. Sale notices depend on that inclusiveness, and Korean readers take 까지 to mean the last day still counts.

Example: 9시부터 6시까지 문을 엽니다.

It is open from nine to six.

-(으)면if ~, when ~

The general conditional. In shop notices it sets the condition attached to a price: 적립한 뒤 행사카드로 결제하면 1만 4990원 means that price applies only if you do both things. The discounted number in Korean advertising almost always has a -(으)면 clause somewhere near it, and it is the part worth reading twice.

Example: 회원 카드를 내면 값이 싸집니다.

If you show your membership card, it becomes cheaper.

N보다 N 배N times more than N

Korean states the baseline first with 보다, then the multiple: 평소보다 5배 이상 = 'more than five times the usual'. Unlike English, which can float 'five times more' with no stated comparison, Korean keeps the baseline in the sentence, so you always know five times what.

Example: 지난해보다 두 배 많이 팔렸습니다.

It sold twice as much as last year.
