A Month Before Kimchi-Making Season, Stores Open Pre-Orders for Salted Cabbage

Translation

About a month before the kimjang season, which usually starts in early November, retailers have begun a 'kimjang battle'. Lotte Mart and Lotte Super took the first round of pre-orders for kimjang items such as salted cabbage from October 1 to 7, and customers can have them delivered whenever they like between November 13 and December 10. Salted cabbage (20 kg) from Haenam, Goesan and Pyeongchang costs between 20,000 and 50,000-odd won, and sun-dried red pepper powder (1 kg) is 38,900 won. At the Suwon wholesale market, three heads of cabbage sold for 17,000 won. According to a survey by the Korea Price Information association (한국물가협회), last year the cost of kimjang for a family of four (20 heads of cabbage) averaged 378,860 won at traditional markets and 477,750 won at large supermarkets. This year the supply of autumn cabbage is expected to be stable, but the crop and price of kimjang radishes, which grew poorly early on, are expected to be the variable.
