금관가야 왕성 '김해 봉황동 유적' 발굴 10년…열두 가지 색으로 보는 전시

A Gaya Royal City Dug for 10 Years: A Gimhae Exhibition Tells It in 12 Colours

Translation

The Bonghwang-dong Site in Gimhae, South Gyeongsang Province, is known as the royal city of Geumgwan Gaya. The national research institute for Gaya heritage has been excavating the site for 10 years, since September 2015. The digs uncovered traces of large-scale land building, in which great amounts of soil and shells were piled up layer upon layer and packed down to enlarge the ground of the royal city. To mark the 10th anniversary of the excavation, the institute is holding a hands-on exhibition, 'Coloured, Bonghwang', from 29 September to 21 November in the ground-floor lobby of the national Gaya history and culture centre. Visitors look at twelve colours found at the site and the excavation stories behind them, then choose the five they like best and receive a 'Bonghwang colour box' as a souvenir. Anyone can see the exhibition for free.

Grammar points

-아/어 오다have been doing (continuing up to now)

오다 after a verb shows an action carried on from the past up to the present: 발굴 조사해 왔습니다, (they) have been excavating. It suits long projects, where the point is the years of work rather than a single moment.

Example: 국립가야문화유산연구소는 2015년 9월부터 10년 동안 이곳을 발굴 조사해 왔습니다.

The national research institute for Gaya heritage has been excavating the site for 10 years, since September 2015.

-(으)려고in order to

-(으)려고 gives the purpose behind an action: 터를 넓히려고 흙을 쌓다, to pile up soil in order to enlarge the ground. In archaeology writing it is how a trace in the soil is turned back into a human intention.

Example: 조사에서는 왕성의 터를 넓히려고 많은 흙과 조개껍데기를 켜켜이 쌓고 다진 대규모 '대지조성' 흔적이 확인됐습니다.

The digs uncovered traces of large-scale land building, in which great amounts of soil and shells were piled up layer upon layer and packed down to enlarge the ground of the royal city.

-(으)ㄴ 뒤after doing

-(으)ㄴ 뒤 puts one step after another: 살펴본 뒤 고르다, to look around and then choose. It is common in instructions and programme descriptions, where the order of steps matters.

Example: 관람객은 발굴 현장에서 찾은 열두 가지 색을 살펴본 뒤, 마음에 드는 다섯 가지 색을 골라 '봉황 색채 상자'를 기념품으로 받을 수 있습니다.

Visitors look at twelve colours found at the site, then choose the five they like best and receive a 'Bonghwang colour box' as a souvenir.
