기초과학연구원 (IBS) said that the LZ international collaboration, which the team of 김영덕, head of its underground research centre, takes part in, has observed a particle interaction that could be read as a signal from 윔프 (WIMP), a dark matter candidate. The researchers installed the detector about 1.5 km underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota, in the United States, and over 220 days, from March 2023 to April 2024, measured the light and electrical signals given off when a particle strikes about 10 tonnes of ultra-pure liquid xenon. The signal's statistical significance is 2.6 sigma: the chance that known background sources alone — natural radiation, detector noise and the like — produced such a signal by coincidence is about 0.5%. However, physics takes 5 sigma as the bar for recognising a new particle. This result is not a discovery yet. The paper was presented on September 1 at TeVPA 2026, a conference held in Japan, released the same day on the preprint site arXiv, and submitted to the journal Physical Review Letters.
