A research team led by Professors Mohit Kumar and 서형탁 at Ajou University has developed a spectral photodetector that imitates the retina of the human eye and turns the wavelength of light directly into an electrical signal. The results were published in the international journal Advanced Materials. The device can read the wavelength of light in the 365–940 nm range directly, with a precision of less than 3 nm. Compared with the conventional method of post-processing with a CNN (convolutional neural network), computational complexity (the number of parameters) fell by 99.9% and downstream energy consumption by 99.5%. The team measured in real time how far milk, yogurt, coconut water and other liquids had been diluted with water, from 0% to 40%, with an accuracy of over 92% and without any separate machine-learning training. The team has also filed a patent application.
