국가데이터처가 9월 22일 발표한 ’2025년 사망원인통계’에 따르면 지난해 사망자 수는 36만2968명으로 전년보다 4399명(1.2%) 늘어, 1970년 사망원인통계 작성 이후 2022년에 이어 두 번째로 많았습니다. 하루 평균 994명이 사망했습니다. 사망자 증가에는 인구 고령화가 가장 큰 영향을 미쳤는데, 전체 사망자의 54.7%가 80세 이상으로 10년 전보다 13.9%포인트 높아졌고, 여성 사망자 가운데 80세 이상 비중은 69.4%에 달했습니다. 주요 사망원인에서는 암이 가장 많았고, 지난해 암 사망자는 9만203명으로 처음으로 9만 명을 넘어 전체 사망자의 24.9%를 차지했으며, 암 사망률은 인구 10만 명당 177.1명으로 전년보다 2.8명 높아졌습니다. 자살 사망자는 1만4144명으로 전년보다 728명(4.9%) 줄어, 2023년과 2024년 2년 연속 증가한 뒤 3년 만에 감소세로 전환했습니다. 다만 10대 자살률은 유일하게 증가해 인구 10만 명당 8.6명으로 전년보다 7.5% 높아졌습니다. 연령대별로는 10대부터 40대까지 자살이 사망원인 1위였고, 40대는 2024년에 이어 지난해에도 자살이 암을 제쳤으며, 50대 이상에서는 암이 가장 많았습니다.

According to the '2025 Cause of Death Statistics' released by the National Data Office on 22 September, the number of deaths last year was 362,968, up 4,399 (1.2%) on the previous year — the second-largest figure since the statistics began in 1970, after 2022. An average of 994 people died each day. Population ageing had the biggest effect on the increase: 54.7% of all deaths were of people aged 80 or over, 13.9 percentage points higher than ten years earlier, and among female deaths the share aged 80 or over reached 69.4%. Cancer was the leading cause of death, with 90,203 cancer deaths — the first time the figure has passed 90,000 — accounting for 24.9% of all deaths, and the cancer death rate rose 2.8 to 177.1 per 100,000 people. Suicide deaths fell to 14,144, down 728 (4.9%) on the previous year, a turn to decline after two consecutive years of increase in 2023 and 2024. The suicide rate among teenagers, however, was the only one to rise, at 8.6 per 100,000, up 7.5%. By age group, suicide was the leading cause of death from the teens through the forties — for people in their forties it again outranked cancer, as in 2024 — while cancer was the most common cause from the fifties up.
