On August 11 the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced its response plan for the supply and demand of major summer vegetables. Worries about vegetable prices rising in the summer heat have been growing, but the prices of major vegetables such as napa cabbage, radish and cabbage are staying below their usual levels. In the first ten days of August the wholesale price of napa cabbage was 3,437 won per head, 32 percent below the normal year, and the retail price was 4,226 won per head, 26 percent below. Radish was 1,877 won each at wholesale, 31 percent below, and cabbage was 1,626 won each, 43 percent below. The summer crop now coming to market is grown mostly in the highlands of Gangwon such as Gangneung, Pyeongchang, Taebaek and Samcheok, and this year's suitable rainfall and temperatures in July and August raised yield per unit area by 5 to 10 percent over a normal year. Leafy vegetables grown under cover moved differently: lettuce was 36,903 won per 4kg at wholesale, only 1.4 percent below the normal year, and perilla leaf was 33,656 won per 4kg, 2.9 percent above. The government has 15,000 tonnes of napa cabbage and 6,000 tonnes of radish in reserve secured last month, and plans to keep running discounts of up to 40 percent on all vegetable items at large supermarkets and traditional markets through to the Chuseok peak season.
