국가독성과학연구소, PFAS 대체물질 'GenX'의 발달신경독성 규명
Korea's National Toxicology Institute Finds Developmental Neurotoxicity in the PFAS Substitute 'GenX'
Part of the August 12, 2026 daily edition
Translation
On August 12, the National Institute of Toxicological Science announced that it had identified the developmental neurotoxicity of 'GenX', a leading substitute for PFAS. The research team used cerebral organoids made from human stem cells — that is, 'mini brains'. When the organoids were continuously exposed to GenX, they shrank by up to 35 percent. The proliferation of neural progenitor cells and the generation of neurons and astrocytes were both impaired, and excitatory and inhibitory synapses alike decreased. The spontaneous electrical activity of the neurons, and their synchronisation, also fell markedly. The findings were published last month, in July, in the international journal 'Materials Today Bio'.

Grammar points
-다고 밝히다to state that ~
The standard way Korean news attributes a claim to the body that made it. 밝히다 is stronger than 말하다 — it frames the statement as an official disclosure — so research announcements, ministry briefings and company results all use it. The quoted clause takes the plain form (했다고, not 했습니다고), and the attribution sits at the end of the sentence, so the source is the last thing you read, not the first.
Example: 회사는 새 공장을 짓겠다고 밝혔습니다.
The company stated that it would build a new plant.
-자as soon as ~, upon ~ing
Attached directly to a verb stem, -자 says the second clause followed immediately once the first happened. In experimental writing it does the work English does with 'when' or 'upon': 노출하자 크기가 감소했습니다 = 'when they were exposed, the size decreased'. It cannot take a tense marker (노출했자 is wrong), and the two clauses must have the natural order of cause before effect — which is exactly why methods sections reach for it.
Example: 문을 열자 찬 바람이 들어왔습니다.
As soon as the door was opened, cold air came in.
-되다to be ~ed (passive)
Swapping -하다 for -되다 turns a Sino-Korean action noun into its passive: 저해하다 (impair) → 저해되다 (be impaired), 게재하다 → 게재되다. Scientific Korean uses it constantly, because the point of the sentence is what happened to the cells, not who did it. Note it removes the agent entirely — if you need to name one, 연구팀에 의해 has to be added back.
Example: 결과가 학술지에 게재되었습니다.
The results were published in an academic journal.
