Korea's Fertility Rate Rises to 0.80, Still World's Lowest

합계출산율은 여성 한 명이 평생 동안 낳을 것으로 예상되는 평균 자녀 수를 나타내는 지표입니다. 한국의 합계출산율은 2023년에 0.72명까지 낮아지며 역대 최저치를 기록했습니다. 그 후 2024년과 2025년에는 출산율이 조금씩 올라 2년 연속 증가세를 보였지만, 그럼에도 한국은 여전히 세계에서 합계출산율이 가장 낮은 나라 중 하나입니다. 국가데이터처에 따르면 2025년 합계출산율은 0.80명(잠정치)이었습니다. 그러나 인구가 현재 수준을 유지하려면 합계출산율이 약 2.1명이 되어야 합니다. 전문가들은 저출산의 원인으로 비싼 주거비와 사교육비, 그리고 일과 육아를 함께 하기 어려운 현실 등을 꼽습니다. 이에 따라 한국 정부는 저출산 문제를 해결하기 위해 다양한 출산 및 육아 지원 정책을 마련해 시행하고 있습니다.

Translation

The total fertility rate is an indicator showing the average number of children a woman is expected to have over her lifetime. Korea's total fertility rate fell to a record low of 0.72 in 2023. Since then, the rate rose slightly for two consecutive years, in 2024 and 2025, but Korea still remains one of the countries with the lowest fertility rate in the world. According to the Ministry of Data and Statistics, Korea's total fertility rate in 2025 was 0.80 (preliminary figure). However, for the population to maintain its current level, the total fertility rate would need to be about 2.1. Experts point to causes of the low birth rate such as high housing costs, private education expenses, and the difficulty of balancing work and childcare. Accordingly, the Korean government is preparing and implementing various policies to support childbirth and childcare in order to solve the low birth rate problem.
