판소리, 한국 전통 공연예술
Pansori: Korea's UNESCO-Listed Traditional Vocal Art
Part of the July 20, 2026 daily edition
Translation
Pansori is a traditional Korean performing art in which a single singer, called a sorikkun, tells a long story using only song, speech, and gesture. The singer alternates between the sung parts, called 'chang,' and the spoken narration parts, called 'aniri,' while adding gestures called 'balrim' to bring the story to life. Beside the singer, a drummer called a gosu keeps the rhythm on a drum, and the gosu shouts encouraging interjections, called chuimsae, to liven up the performance. The five representative works of pansori are called the 'five pansori madang,' and they include Chunhyangga, Simcheongga, Heungboga, Sugungga, and Jeokbyeokga. Pansori became highly popular among the common people in the late Joseon period and was widely loved. The stories naturally contain the lives and emotions of ordinary people, which is why they resonated with so many. In recognition of its artistic value, pansori was designated a UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2003. Even today, pansori continues to be performed as a representative traditional performing art of Korea.

The drummer beats the drum while shouting encouragements.
-는데and, but (background)
Attached to a verb stem to give background information or set up a situation before the main clause that follows; it can also imply mild contrast.

Attached to a verb or adjective stem to indicate the reason or cause for the action or state described in the following clause ('because ~, so ~').
