Grammar points

-(으)려던 Na N that was going to ...

-(으)려고 하다 means to be about to do or to intend to do. Its modifier form -(으)려던 sits in front of a noun and describes something that was going to happen but did not, or was interrupted. 김포공항으로 가려던 항공편 is the flight that was going to fly to Gimpo. The -던 part carries the sense of an unfinished past, which is why this form appears so often in stories about cancellations and changes of plan.

Example: 28일 저녁, 일본 하네다공항에서 김포공항으로 가려던 대한항공 KE2104편이 결항됐습니다.

On the evening of the 28th, 대한항공 flight KE2104, which was going to fly from Haneda Airport in Japan to Gimpo Airport, was cancelled.

-지만but, although

-지만 attaches directly to a verb or adjective stem, with or without a past marker, and joins two clauses that pull in different directions. 고장은 없었지만 is there was no fault, but. The contrast often sets up a surprise in the second half, and here the surprise is that the plane still could not fly. Note that 은/는 on 고장 sharpens the contrast: no fault, yet.

Example: 비행기에 직접적인 고장은 없었지만, 전자 장치를 점검해야 한다는 메시지가 떴습니다.

There was no direct fault with the aircraft, but a message came up saying the electronic systems needed to be inspected.
