계명대, 충격파로 수소연료전지 소재 결함 제어 기술 개발
Keimyung University Develops a Way to Control Defects in a Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Material Using Shockwaves
Part of the August 16, 2026 daily edition
Translation
A joint research team of Professor Kim Ik-hyun of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Professor Kim Jun-seok of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Keimyung University has developed a technology that uses shockwave flow to control the defect structure of a core material for next-generation hydrogen fuel cells. The team used repeated shockwave flow to create a momentary non-equilibrium environment inside the material. It then systematically established the structural changes arising in that process using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), specific surface area (BET) and particle size analysis (PSA). The results confirmed that oxygen defects and the concentration of Ce3+ increase with the number of shockwave repetitions and then stabilise beyond a certain level. The findings were published in the international journal Ceramics International, which is in the top 7.4 percent and the first quartile by JCR. The research was carried out with support from the National Research Foundation of Korea's programme for outstanding early-career researchers and from Keimyung University's Bisa research fund.
Vocabulary
- 충격파명사 (noun)shockwave
- 유동명사 (noun)flow (of a fluid or gas)
- 결함명사 (noun)defect (here: a missing atom in a crystal lattice, which can be useful)
- 제어하다동사 (verb)to control (a process or variable)
- 비평형명사 (noun)non-equilibrium (a state not settled into balance)
- 조성하다동사 (verb)to create, bring about (an environment or fund)
- 농도명사 (noun)concentration (how much of something is present)
- 안정화되다동사 (verb)to stabilise, level off
Grammar points
-다가~ and then (switching to something else)
Marks a change of course partway through. 증가하다 일정 수준 이후 안정화되는 현상 describes a quantity that rises and then stops rising — one behaviour giving way to another. Note the short form 증가하다 here: before 가 is dropped in fast written style, but the meaning is the same as 증가하다가.
Example: 값이 오르다가 지난달부터 떨어졌습니다.
Prices had been rising, and then fell from last month.
N을/를 통해through N, by means of N
Names the instrument or route by which something was achieved. In methods writing it introduces the techniques used, and it can hold a whole list — XRD, XPS, BET and PSA all sit inside one 통해 here. It says nothing about how well the method worked; that comes in the next sentence.
Example: 설문조사를 통해 의견을 모았습니다.
Opinions were gathered through a survey.
N의 지원을 받아with support from N, funded by N
The standard closing line of a Korean research announcement, naming who paid for the work. It is a disclosure, not a boast, and journals now require the equivalent — so when you see it at the end of a science story, read it as the funding statement rather than as part of the result.
Example: 이 연구는 정부의 지원을 받아 수행됐습니다.
This research was carried out with government support.
