KAIST 연구팀, 배터리 나노 분석의 '가짜 신호' 원인 규명…표면 요철이 이온 이동처럼 보였다

A KAIST Team Traced the False Signals in Battery Nano-Analysis to Surface Roughness Rather Than Moving Ions

Translation

A KAIST research team has found the cause of the false signals that show up when batteries are analysed at the nanoscale. The team deliberately cut fine grooves into the surface of single-crystal silicon, a material in which ions do not move. When the height of the surface changed, so did how firmly the microscope probe met the sample, and that change alone produced a signal resembling real ion movement. When they smoothed the surface flat with a cooled cross-section polisher using an argon ion beam, the strong signal that had been appearing at the grain boundaries disappeared. The findings were published in the international journal 스몰 메서즈.

Grammar points

-만으로도with only ..., by ... alone

만 limits, 으로 marks the means, and 도 adds 'even' — together they say that this much on its own was enough. The force of it is that nothing further was needed, which is why an experiment that rules other causes out reaches for this shape. Drop the 도 and 만으로 still limits the means but loses the note of surprise that the little was enough.

Example: 이 변화만으로도 실제 이온 이동과 비슷한 신호가 나왔습니다.

That change alone produced a signal resembling real ion movement.

-자as soon as, upon doing

-자 attaches to a verb stem and says the second event followed immediately on the first, with the first reading as the trigger. It cannot take a tense marker in front of it, and the clause it heads cannot carry a command or a suggestion. Experimental writing likes it because it states the sequence without claiming a mechanism: they polished, and the signal went — the reader is left to see the link.

Example: 표면을 평평하게 다듬자 입계에서 나타나던 강한 신호가 사라졌습니다.

When they smoothed the surface flat, the strong signal that had been appearing at the grain boundaries disappeared.

-던that used to, that had been (adnominal)

-던 modifies a noun with something that was going on in the past and is now over or interrupted. Set it against -(으)ㄴ, which presents a past action as simply finished: 나타난 신호 is a signal that appeared, while 나타나던 신호 is one that kept appearing until this point. That distinction carries the whole sentence here, because the news is that the signal stopped.

Example: 입계에서 나타나던 강한 신호가 사라졌습니다.

The strong signal that had been appearing at the grain boundaries disappeared.
