In the sea off 용수리, 한경면, on Jeju, 1.2 km from land, stands the 5-megawatt (MW) 'Jeju wave-power open-sea test site', the first of its kind built in Asia and now approaching ten years since completion. It generates electricity by using the force of the air pushed in and out of the structure by the waves to turn a turbine, and that electricity is sent to an electrolysis unit that splits seawater into hydrogen and oxygen. 김길원 of the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering said that from next month the demonstration will be completed through to the stage of storing the hydrogen in containers and using it again. As of the end of 2025, renewables made up 24.3% of Jeju's power generation, more than double the national average of 10.6%, and the island's curtailment of wind and solar output reached 28,852 megawatt-hours (MWh) in 2022, 35,558 MWh in 2023 and 11,940 MWh up to June 2024. Jeju plans to expand green-hydrogen production linked to renewables from the current 3.3 MW to 21.2 MW by 2030, and to raise the number of hydrogen fuel-cell cars from 181 now to 1,336 by 2030. Governor 위성곤 said at a press briefing at Jeju ICC on the 15th that the province is pursuing an undersea high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) link to send surplus renewable power to the mainland, which the provincial government estimates would cost about 18 trillion won.
