Grammar

-라고도 부르다

Meaning

Intermediate-ragodo bureuda

Gives an alternative name or nickname for something, meaning 'is also called ~.' Combines the quotative particle 라고 (or 이라고 after a consonant) with 도 ('also') and 부르다 ('to call'), literally 'is also called [quoted name].'

Form

Attach 라고 to a noun ending in a vowel, 이라고 to a noun ending in a consonant, insert 도, then add 부르다: N(이)라고도 부르다. E.g., 한가위 (vowel-final) → 한가위라고도 부릅니다. It's also common in the passive form -라고도 불리다 ('is also referred to as'), which doesn't need a stated subject doing the calling.

Examples

Common mistakes & nuance

부르다 is a 르-irregular verb (불러요, 불렀어요, etc.), so its conjugated forms change the stem, but that irregularity is separate from this 라고도 부르다 pattern itself. In more formal or written contexts, the passive -라고도 불리다 is often preferred over the active -라고도 부르다.
