Grammar
-(으)ㄴ 결과
Meaning
Advanced-(eu)n gyeolgwa
Takes a completed action and presents what follows as its outcome — 'as a result of ~ing'. It belongs to statistics and report Korean, where the point is usually the mechanism behind a number rather than blame for it. Two positions are common: in front of the result clause (…을 줄인 결과 이익이 늘었습니다) and at the end of a sentence as -(으)ㄴ 결과입니다, which explains a figure the reader has already been shown.
Form
결과 is a noun, so the clause in front takes the completed modifier -(으)ㄴ and a space before it: 줄이다 → 줄인 결과, 조사하다 → 조사한 결과, 받다 → 받은 결과. A stem ending in ㄹ drops it before ㄴ: 웃돌다 → 웃돈 결과. The phrase itself carries no tense; tense sits on the result clause (늘었습니다) or on the closing 이다 (결과입니다, 결과였습니다).
Examples
비용을 줄인 결과 이익이 늘었습니다.
As a result of cutting costs, profits rose.
Common mistakes & nuance
조사한 결과, 분석한 결과 and 확인한 결과 are set openers meaning 'on investigating / on analysing ~', and there the second clause reports what was found, not something the investigation caused — do not read them as claims of causation. Note also that the modifier in this pattern is always -(으)ㄴ, never -는: a -는 결과 sequence is a different structure, with 결과 as an ordinary object noun (…하는 결과를 낳다, 'to produce a result where ~').
Similar grammar
- -기 때문이다
Both can close a sentence with an explanation, and the difference is what kind. -기 때문이다 gives the reason a fact holds. -(으)ㄴ 결과입니다 says the figure is the outcome of a process that ran its course — it points at a mechanism, which is why statistical reporting reaches for it where an opinion piece would reach for -기 때문이다.
- 때문에
때문에 wants a noun in front of it (or a clause nominalized with -기) and tends to assign blame — the N is usually why something went wrong. -(으)ㄴ 결과 takes a full completed clause and stays neutral, so it fits a rise as comfortably as a fall.
