Grammar
N 중
Meaning
BeginnerN jung
N 중 names the group a selection or a ranking is taken from — 'among N', 'out of N'. It matters because it bounds the claim: 한국영화 중 1위 is number one among Korean films, which is not the same as number one overall, and Korean reporting keeps that group in the sentence rather than leaving it to context. Two extensions do most of the work in news writing: N 중 하나 'one of the N', and N 중에서 when a choice is being made out of the group.
Form
중 is a bound noun, so it follows a noun phrase with a space before it: 한국영화 중, 참가한 팀 중, 이 중. Being a noun, it takes the particles a noun takes — 중에 for a plain 'among', 중에서 when something is picked out of the group, 중에는 when the group is made the topic — and the bare 중 with no particle is the compressed form headlines prefer. What follows 중 is the part selected: a rank (1위), a count (2명), or 하나 for 'one of them'.
Examples
참가한 팀 중 우리가 가장 빨랐습니다.
Among the teams that took part, we were the fastest.
Common mistakes & nuance
중 has a second, unrelated sense — 'in the middle of, during' — attached in exactly the same way: 공사 중 'under construction', 회의 중 'in a meeting', 조사 중 'under investigation'. What tells the two apart is what comes after: a selected part (a rank, a number, 하나) means 'among', and nothing following means 'during'. In statistics writing, watch the direction as well: the noun before 중 is the whole, so 500명 중 200명 is 200 out of 500, and reading it the other way inverts the sentence.

- N 가운데
The same meaning, a different register. 중 is the everyday word and the one spoken Korean uses; 가운데 is the written, formal equivalent, which is why official notices and statistics articles reach for it. 이 중 and 이 가운데 are both the fixed way to carry a total over from the previous sentence.
- N 등
등 follows the items themselves and says the list is not exhaustive ('A, B and so on'); 중 follows the whole group and says a part is about to be taken out of it. 영화 3편 등 means three films among others not named, while 영화 3편 중 means out of those three films.
