Grammar
-(으)ㄴ 지 N 만에
Meaning
Advanced-(eu)n ji N mane
Expresses that something happens after a specific length of time has passed since another event took place — 'N (amount of time) after ~.' -(으)ㄴ 지 marks the event being counted from, and 만에 attaches to the time span to mean 'in/after that much time.'
Form
Attach -(으)ㄴ 지 to the verb stem (ㄴ 지 after a vowel-final stem, 은 지 after a consonant-final stem) to mark the event being counted from, then follow it with a time span + 만에: 입원하다 → 입원한 지 나흘 만에 (four days after being hospitalized). The main verb after 만에 states what happened once that time had passed.
Examples
80대 여성이 입원한 지 나흘 만에 세상을 떠났다.
A woman in her 80s passed away four days after being hospitalized.
결혼한 지 일 년 만에 아이가 태어났어요.
A year after they got married, their baby was born.
그는 고향을 떠난 지 십 년 만에 돌아왔다.
He returned ten years after leaving his hometown.
Common mistakes & nuance
만에 needs an actual time-duration word before it (나흘, 일 년, 십 년, 삼 개월 등) — it can't attach directly to just any noun. Don't confuse this with simply asking how much time has passed (-(으)ㄴ 지 얼마나 됐어요?), which doesn't use 만에.
Similar grammar
- -(으)ㄴ 후에
-(으)ㄴ 후에 simply means 'after doing ~,' with no focus on how much time passed. -(으)ㄴ 지 N 만에 specifically highlights the length of the interval — it always includes a time expression like 나흘, 일 년.
